What Causes Pelvic Pain in Women?

pelvic pain Though you may eat well, exercise frequently, and live a holistically healthy lifestyle, sometimes bodily pain is unavoidable. This is especially true with pelvic pain in women, which is often chronic and challenging to diagnose and resolve. And this isn’t an uncommon issue either. It’s estimated that fifteen to twenty percent of women experience some form of chronic pelvic pain.

So what is it exactly that causes pelvic pain in women? Here are a few of the most common causes:

Endometriosis

A common cause of chronic pelvic pain in women is a condition known as endometriosis. Put simply: the disease causes the lining of the uterus to grow outside the uterus as well. These lining growths attempt to respond to the menstrual cycle but cannot be expelled, causing them to remain in the body. As you can well imagine, this leads to chronic pelvic pain caused by cysts and scar tissue that begins to form.

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)

Pelvic inflammatory disease, or PID, is often the result of a sexually transmitted disease wherein the bacteria has spread to the uterus, fallopian tubes, and even the ovaries. Over time this bacteria can cause scarring of these pelvic organs. Though this is often accompanied by pelvic pain and other issues, some women with PID never show any signs or symptoms.

Vulvodynia

Vulvodynia is another common cause of pelvic pain in women. It is simply a chronic pain or discomfort of the vagina which has no discernable reason. This pain typically lasts about three months but can go for much longer and flare up again at indeterminate times. Thankfully, as with all of the aforementioned conditions, pelvic pain treatment will help soothe any painful or debilitating symptoms.

Various Syndromes

The three issues mentioned above are far from the only causes of pelvic pain. That’s why you need an expert gynecologist to help accurately diagnose and relieve your pelvic pain. A few other common causes include:

  • Fibroids
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Pelvic congestion syndrome
  • Various Musculoskeletal problems
