What Happens After IVF? The Two-Week Wait and Beyond

Man and woman holding hands discussing IVF with doctor in Kettering, OH The moment your embryo transfer is complete, it might feel like the finish line of your IVF journey is within reach. But for many, the most emotionally intense part begins now: the two-week wait (2WW). This period between embryo transfer and your pregnancy test can be filled with hope, anxiety, and countless questions. So, what happens after IVF? Here’s what to expect.

At Huey & Weprin OB/Gyn, we understand how emotionally challenging the IVF process can be, which is why our compassionate team is here to support you through every step of your fertility journey. With board-certified OB/Gyns and nurse practitioners offering reproductive care, we’re dedicated to delivering personalized, expert guidance in a warm and understanding environment.

The First Few Days After Embryo Transfer

After the transfer, your body needs time for the embryo to implant in the uterine lining. You may be prescribed progesterone or other medications to support this process. It’s normal to wonder if every twinge or cramp means something. Implantation can cause mild cramping or spotting, though many people feel no symptoms at all.

What to Expect Emotionally

The two-week wait can be a rollercoaster. Try to avoid the temptation of taking early pregnancy tests, as they can lead to false positives or negatives due to lingering hormones from the IVF medications. Instead, focus on self-care: rest, hydrate, take gentle walks, and lean on your support network.

Common Physical Symptoms

Some women experience symptoms similar to early pregnancy: fatigue, bloating, breast tenderness, or mood swings. However, these can also be side effects of fertility medications, making it difficult to rely on them for clues.

The Beta hCG Test

Around 9-14 days after the embryo transfer, you’ll return to the clinic for a beta hCG blood test. This test measures the presence and level of the pregnancy hormone. If positive, your doctor may schedule a follow-up test to ensure the levels rise appropriately, an encouraging sign of early pregnancy.

Life Beyond the Two-Week Wait

A positive test is just the beginning. Ongoing monitoring will follow, including early ultrasounds to check for fetal heartbeat and proper development. If you have a negative test result, your doctor will discuss the next steps, whether that involves another cycle or exploring other options.
