Recovering After a Hysterectomy

Gynecologist explains to a woman about a disease of the uterus The physicians at Huey & Weprin, OB/Gyn are able to offer three types of hysterectomy surgeries to our patients, based on their personal needs and health history. Recovery time for a hysterectomy varies based on the type of surgery you have- vaginal, abdominal, or robotic- and from person to person, so it is important to follow your doctor’s instructions. The recovery process can take anywhere from two to six weeks, depending on the type of procedure performed. The team at Huey and Weprin OB/GYN in Englewood and Kettering, OH, can help walk you through post-operative care instructions to reduce your risk of complications and get you back to your every-day-activities.

Will Recovery Be Painful?

During this time, patients will likely experience some pain and discomfort, which can be managed with prescribed medication by the doctor. Other common symptoms, such as fatigue, dizziness, and low energy levels, may also occur. It is recommended that until fully recovered, activities should be limited, and physical exertion avoided.

Can I Return Home or Work After My Procedure?

Patients who have vaginal or robotic surgeries are generally able to return home the same day as their procedure, while an abdominal surgery may require and overnight stay in the hospital. All post-hysterectomy surgery patients need to ensure adequate rest and recovery immediately following their surgery, while avoiding any strenuous activity or exercise to ensure proper healing. Your doctor will give you specific instructions about when you can return to work and resume physical activities.

What Complications May Arise?

During the healing process, look out for any warning signs that could indicate a complication or infection, such as pain that does not subside with medication, fever, heavy bleeding, redness, or swelling around the incision site. If these symptoms are experienced, contact your provider immediately.

What Can I Expect After Healing From My Hysterectomy?

In most cases, patients who have undergone a hysterectomy will experience an improved quality of life due to decreased symptoms associated with their original condition or diagnosis. Many patients report feeling more energetic after surgery and relieved from their previous symptoms due to the removal of their uterus.
